2026 VOTING
Peterborough town election: 12 MAY 2026
TO ASSIST NH RESIDENTS IN
REGISTERING TO VOTE:
To assist NH residents with registering to vote, town and city clerks can now issue free
certified copies of New Hampshire vital records for voter registration purposes only.
These free records, and the process to issue them, are different from other New
Hampshire vital records.
What Does the Free Certified Copy for Voter Registration Look Like?
The Free Voter Registration Certified Copy prints with a watermark indicating that it is
valid for New Hampshire voter registration purposes only. It will still be issued on safety
paper, signed by the clerk or deputy (or signature stamped by an assistant) and sealed
with the town or city seal. It also has a section for the NH Election Official to complete
when receiving the free certified copy along with the voter registration application.
Who Can Obtain a Free Certified Copy for Voter Registration?
Like other vital records, the record will be issued to the individual or a member of his/her
immediate family or the registrant’s legal guardian or legal representative with a tangible
interest in assisting a voter exercising their right to vote. (Proof of legal representation or
guardianship must be provided.)
Where Are Free Certified Copies for Voter Registration Issued?
Certified copies of vital events can be issued by any New Hampshire town or city clerk in their town/city office. The records can also be issued by the Division of Vital Records. Vital event records are for the following:
• Birth: 1935 to present (excluding 1949-1950)
• Marriage: 1960 to present
• Divorce: 1979 to present
• Civil Union: 2008 & 2009
• Dissolution: 2008 to present
For events that are not listed above please contact the Division of Vital Records. Divorces prior to 1979 will need to be requested directly from the Division of Vital Records.
The Application Process:
It is important for the applicant to understand that the record(s) may only be used for the
purpose of registering to vote in the State of New Hampshire. The voter is prohibited
from using the record for any other purpose including for registering to vote in another
state. The record must also be surrendered to a NH Election Official when registering
to vote. A new application has been created because of these caveats. It is called the
“Application for a Free Certified Copy of a New Hampshire Vital Record for New
Hampshire Voter Registration.” The applicant must complete the form, and like any other vital record request, must provide proof of identity.

UPDATE: 5-1-26
The U.S. HOUSE passed the SAVE ACT 17 March 2026.
As of 20 April 2026, the U.S. SENATE has stalled their actions.
LET'S OPPOSE THIS ACTION
"The House-passed SAVE America Act (SAVE Act 2.0) would make it harder for eligible voters to register AND cast a ballot. This would make it harder to vote and have no calculable benefit to the election process. Millions of Americans lack the identification that would be required to prove their citizenship or obtain a photo ID. Without those things, their voices would be silenced, their votes left uncast."
